MARSH, MASS. (WHDH) – Buying ingredients for Memorial Day meals will cost more this year.
“I can’t believe the beef prices, it’s outrageous,” said Collin Ryder, who was shopping Friday. “It’s more than lobster for just a ribeye steak.”
The consumer price index indicated that food prices rose more than 10%, the biggest increase since 1980.
“A gallon of milk you can’t even afford right now,” said Joe Sacchetti, who was also at the grocery store. “Fuel, groceries, everything.”
He added that these price increases caused him to rethink his Memorial Day menu.
“Steak (or) burger, you have to make a choice,” he said.
Others said they rely more on coupons and other bargains to get through these periods.
The manager of the store where customers shop, Zach Bender, said that while he was aiming to keep prices low, he was more concerned with making sure the shelves were well stocked.
“We’ve done our best to keep prices low,” he said, “but it’s hard to maintain a profit at the same time.”
The cost of propane used to grill these steaks is also up this year.
