Smash-and-grab in Auckland high-end sneakers, clothing store

Five people have been charged with burglary after a high-end trainer and clothing store in Auckland was the target of an overnight smash-and-grab.

Police and security could be seen at Subtype in Westfield Newmarket around 4am on Thursday.

A police spokesman said at around 2:10 a.m. police received a report of a group of people breaking into the store.

Officers attended the scene, but the suspects fled in a stolen vehicle.

Police in the Eagle helicopter watched the vehicle until it came to a stop on Capstick Rd, Ōtara.

“Police have located the five passengers, who have been taken into custody. Investigations are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

Police later said five men between the ages of 17 and 25 were due in court on Thursday for burglary.

Any damage to the entrance to the store has been blocked by dividing screens. Video from 1News showed a police officer inside the store as screens were pulled across the entrance.

Through a display case, shards of glass could be seen strewn across the floor, along with what appeared to be a lone hanger and a piece of clothing.

The policeman could then be seen from the street walking around the store, inspecting the damage. He emerged shortly after to retrieve what looked like a bag of evidence from his vehicle, before heading back inside.

It comes a day after Michael Hill Newmarket, a central Auckland liquor store and a North Shore vape shop were robbed.
